Hemorrhoids Prevention – Does Losing Weight Make a Difference?
January 27th, 2010 | Clearmed | Comments Off
Medical professionals agree that our diet, liquid intake, sedentary (and in particular ‘sitting’) lifestyle and body weight all contribute to the development (and, potentially – re-development) of hemorrhoids.
Are you concerned about hemorrhoids prevention – and how you can stop them from happening to you? Have you already had surgery to have them removed or used a natural product which has helped, and now you want to know more about how to stop them from re-developing. Will weight loss help?
If these questions concern you – then read on – we may be able to shed light on the subject.
Hemorrhoids are swollen tissues which form in and around the lower rectum and anus. They are caused by increased pressure – blood and body fluids – in the pelvic area. This causes tissues to swell. The body responds by growing additional skin layers to protect them. Symptoms include itching, pain during and after bowel movements, and the physical item. Complications are blocked digestive passages, fissures, infections, and social embarrassment because of the way they look.
As a society we are overweight, and we know it. We lead sedentary lifestyles, and we are constantly told to take more exercise. Our food is over-processed, and we suffer from bouts of constipation alternating with diarrhea, depending on what we have eaten in the past few days.
Our liquid intake is in the form of coffee, tea, or alcohol – all of which are considered diuretics. These remove liquid from our digestive tract, making it harder for food waste to be passed along and out. Our bowel movements are irregular, and when we do feel the need to ‘go’, we often feel the need to push and strain in order to evacuate.
The straining causes increased pressure in the pelvic region (this is the same effect that pregnancy or carrying heavy weights has on the system) which in turn causes development of hemorrhoids.
Obese people have the same problem – increased weight causes increased blood pressure levels. Always carrying around additional pounds places a physical burden on the ligaments and tissues in the human frame.
We cannot tell you to lose weight. We cannot even tell you that losing weight will prevent piles. What we can do is point out a correlation between facts.
The medical professionals keep telling us that losing even a small percentage of our body weight makes a big difference to our blood pressure. Perhaps a small percentage of weight loss will have the same effect on your system from the point of view of stopping hemorrhoids. It could be that your doctor will be pleased too.
If you would like to calculate your chances of developing hemorrhoids – at preventhemorroids.org you will find plenty more information about the problem, what causes them, how you can help them.
